Five for Friday... I mean Sunday:-)

So I am linking up with Doodle Bugs Teaching to share my Five for Friday.... just on Sunday! I am really excited because we had a fun week in third grade!

We have been working on place value a ton! So here are my kids using place value mystery task cards

And, they loved them!! It was a much bigger hit than I thought it was going to be!

And this one I am really excited about. I kinda got the idea from 4th Grade Frolics. I had my students complete these adorable snowmen pictures with chalk. The pictures were completed based on this dice activity!
The finished pictures were adorable! And, they had so much fun working with the chalk and using different colored chalk.

After they completed their chalk snowman, they were asked to write a paragraph description of their snowman. Their description was aimed to be as detailed as possible because they were not going to be putting their names on their snowman. Eventually, we hung up the the snowmen and exchanged descriptive paragraphs with partners. It was clear to see that it was easier for their partner to find their snowman if the description was detailed, but the descriptions that were short and vague were much more difficult to find matching snowmen. It was a great activity, and the students were engaged while realizing how important details are in writing!

In writing, we've been studying facts and opinions so that we can start our opinion writing next week. We had a great debate....
The sweeties did not want to stop! I split up the class between cats and dogs, and they had time to come up with reasons and examples as to why cats or dogs were the best pet. We then came back together to have a "respectful" debate." If it weren't for PE, we could have been at it for hours! Great activity!

And a little math fun!

We reinforced place value with a matching memory game with numbers up to hundred thousands  written in standard form and word form. They wanted to get the most matches!

And ....

This one isn't so much fun....

I'll be out Tuesday and Wednesday at training, so I've been tackling my sub plans. Man, they are a lot more work and time consuming than I wanted them to be!

Have a great week!!

New Years' Resolutions

Oh my goodness, I really need to be better at this! I absolutely love blogging, but there are just not enough hours in the day! For some reason, January has been very overwhelming. Maybe it is the fact that we got a three week vacation, so it was very difficult to transition back into the swing of things. But, I am finally feel back on my feet now. We have been doing some awesome writing and reading activities that I am very excited to share with ya. But first.....

1. I want to blog more. I really enjoy connecting with other teachers around the country. It is so inspiring to watch and see what other teachers are doing. I also think blogging makes me remember how empowering teacher is as a profession. I'm so grateful to love my profession so much, and I sure do wanna continue to stay up to date with all the creative, hands on instructional ideas out there!

2. I want to spend more time on me. As a first year teacher, I am so concerned with my classroom, my sweeties, and sleep. But, I really need to focus on taking some time on the weekends to clear my mind and stay healthy. And my plan is to go back to my most favorite thing... yoga!! I love hot yoga, and I really need to get back into it. Anyone else out there obsessed with hot yoga??

3. I want to learn from the experienced teachers at my school.
4. I want to take a summer off:-) haaa maybe... I don't know if I can sit still for that long.
5. I want to do at least three Monday Made its in a row!
6. I want to see these ladies more!

6. I want to stay close to my Lord... and remember that He is the reason that I am so happy<3

And a glimpse into our third grade January

A little force and motion:-)
A little cause and effect

Happy Friday... and I promise I'll be back soon!

The Holidays

Ahhh, I never got around to posting about our Christmas fun in our third grade classroom. Right after Christmas, I was blessed enough to sail away to the Bahamas to ring in the new year.

Ahh... take me back!
But right before break, we did some fun, hands on activities to keep the kiddos engaged amidst their anticipation! We have been working really hard on mastering the uses of possessive nouns and also the meaning of possessive nouns. The kids had a lot of fun doing some sorting activities distinguishing between plural and singular possessives. However, I had to go back and think of a new activity when I realized many of my kiddos were still writing their possessives incorrectly, especially their plural possessives.
And, that's when I found this fun activity!
This activity required the students to scan the room and write the possessive form of objects around the room, including teachers/students/etc. THE KIDS WENT WILD FOR THIS! You can grab this here !

As you can see, the sweeties went crazy for "sticking" each other with a possessive name. This was a lot of fun, and I actually did get a chance to use some of the students' stickies as data for a little formative assessment:-)

And just a quick picture from third grade wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Stay tuned for some New Year resolutions!

Happy 2014
