Five For Friday! And a Four Day Weekend!!

Well, it has been a long, crazy week! But, I am so happy it is finally Friday! This was our first week back from spring break, and we had conferences all week. So being able to sleep in on a Friday was really working for me this morning:-)

I am linking up with Doodle Bugs Teaching for my five random shenanigans of the week!

We have been continuing our journey with geometry! Here are a few snapshots of geometry in actio

My kiddos have been working really hard learning the different attributes of quadrilaterals, triangles, and polygons! They have been doing such an awesome job! I would love to hear some suggestions below about how you teach geometry in your classroom!

We also just started studying fairy tales in our room. During reading workshop, we have been diligently reading all sorts of fairy tales, and we have been studying the components in detail.
Next week, my third graders will begin to write their very own fractured fairy tale.

And they even all are listening attentively! Gotta love the engagement!

I have two new additions to my classroom! I bought this adorable lime green chart from Walmart! And the adorable stool is from my parents! They scooped it up for me from a church auction..... very sweet of them! And, it both of these additions flow quite beautifully with my classroom theme!

I'm so proud of their writing..... look at those paragraphs and transition words! I'm so impressed with my third graders' growth!

And last but not least.....

We came back on Monday from spring break, had conferences all week, and I just had to splurge before work yesterday!

Happy Easter friends!

Biographies!

I can't believe I only have one more day of spring break! Boy do breaks fly by!!!

Here are a few snapshots of my sunny, relaxing break.

My mom and I took my grandma, Nan:-), to Vegas! Oh, she was totally adorable in the casinos! Actually, she was quite appalled by the "wild" behavior and outfits that she saw! My aunt also met us from California, which was wonderful. Overall, it was a nice, relaxing change of pace. But, here I am one day away from reality. And to make the week back after spring break even worse, we have conferences all week!

But, I will remain positive!!!!!
I'm excited for our families to see our biographies hanging outside our classroom when they come to conferences. We have been working on biographies for about a month now, and I am quite relieved and excited to start our new writing unit, fairy tales. But, the kids ended up doing a fabulous job on their biographies. I used this pack to guide my teaching and students in their writing.
To begin, the students brainstormed who they wanted to research. They then worked with their families to come up with three viable options to write their biography about. After returning those three people, I assigned names trying to give away first choice, which worked out fabulously. The kids were excited that they ALL got their first choice.
We then researched online, in books, and through short video clips and documented our information here.
After researching for quite some time, the students were ready to transfer their facts into paragraph form. We had to review the components of a paragraph, and of course, I turned to Moby and Annie for some help! We watched this Brain Pop video to review the components of a paragraph.
To be completely honest, we watched this  video 3 or 4 times throughout the week to review how to begin and end our paragraphs. I sure hope they can tell me what a topic sentence is after watching this video so many times:-) We even came up with some WBT body movements to describe a topic sentence. Unfortunately, I forgot to snap pictures of my students' writing, but they used these graphic organizers to guide their writing.

After brainstorming, researching, and writing, we began to revise and edit! Differently than most of my writing units, this unit took a very LONG time, or at least it felt like it for me! I am very proud of my students for persevering and keeping their motivation flying high as they moved through the WHOLE writing process! After revising and editing, they published and were given time to draw a self portrait of their person! They were absolutely thrilled! Check some of these cuties out. I certainly could have some future artists in the making!

Michael Jackson!

Look at that, Obama!
My favorite!!

And lastly, we went on a gallery walk to ask questions and show our peers all of our hard work!

Happy Saturday Friends!

April Currently

It is finally April! I am very excited that it is April because hopefully warm weather will come with this new month! Our winter here in Michigan has been long and cold, and I am so ready for some warm weather and sunshine! Speaking of sunshine, I will be in Las Vegas laying at the pool in approximately 4 days!! Bring it on spring break!

Check out my April Currently

Currently, I am listening to my love sing along to his music while he is studying for his pharmacy exam. It's funny how some people sing along as they study, some just listen to music while they study, and other need silence as they study. I always liked to listen to music when I studied, but I sure hope I didn't sing along while I was in the library studying:-)

Currently, I am loving the fact that I will be on a plane and laying at the pool in four days from now. We start spring break at approximately 4pm this Friday, and I will be on a plane this weekend to Las Vegas with my mom, grandmother, and aunt. I am beyond excited to see the sunshine and also just to relax and turn my mind off for awhile! It is so hard to do that as a teacher!

Currently, I am thinking that I have a ton of grading to do before I leave for spring break. I am the type of person who likes to go on break with all my work prepped and completed for when I return. I want my lesson plans, small group lesson plans, centers, and papers graded and done before I leave school this Friday. But unfortunately, we have conferences the week we come back! I know, so not fair!! So, I have been doing report cards and finishing up grading which has led me to neglect my lesson plans! It will get done though.....I hope!

Currently, I am wanting an extra prep hour in the day to rearrange my classroom slightly. I have been wanting to get rid of my teacher desk for a while and move my small group table over to that corner, but I never seem to find the time to think it out and actually do it! I am thinking I can move my small group table over to my teacher corner, and I can place an extra table in that former corner for my work on writing station! I also really think this will open up the room!

Currently, I am needing some good ole sleep! I have had meetings until 7ish every night this week, was observed last week, and am now coming down with a cold. I need to get some quality sleep, and it would be oh so wonderful to walk into school tomorrow with a grande White Chocolate Mocha in hand!

And yes, we go until June 18th, and it is a full day !!!!! I know this is late, but luckily since we had so many extra days built into our calendar, we hopefully won't have to make up any snow days!

Thanks for the currently Farley, and I am excited to check out what the rest of you are up to this April!

Happy April and happy soon spring break!!
